    There are a several schools of thought on this subject. Especially when assigning gender to the connector itself. Here are the questions I ask myself:

    1. Is the body ONLY able to accept pins or sockets, but not either. Then if it's a pin, it's male, socket it's female.

    2. If the answer to question 1 is both, then I look at the construction of the body. If usually defer to this image

     

    In the MIL symbol in E3.series, the body usually references the Default Letter Code. The connector that is "less movable" is a J and the "more movable, a "P". Also in many MIL applications, the body can accept pins or sockets depending on the part number. The E3.series Extended Connector capability allows assignment of the gender to the contact

    Trust me, you can get into quite a discussion depending on the viewpoint with the other party.

    Bottom line is to come up with a procedure that is acceptable to all parties, document it, and follow the process as a guideline in you database creation process..
